stork daddy i've always heard it as catch as catch can, but the phrase has been around in some form or another since the 1300s, where it was expressed "catch that catch may". I do not think it has any deeper meanings other than catch in whatever matter one can catch. it could easily be formulated as "a catch is a catch". 060314
