i found a playlist i made years ago, a bizarre mix to say the least dick dale, presley and hendrix beastie boys and the cramps but it’s a whisper: welcome back luckily learning how to listen only requires muscle memory like riding a bike, like swimming for so long i floated on the top, sunglasses on, dozing in the sun till i was burnt to a crisp, at most taking a quick dip to cool off now i’m standing on the edge of a diving board, feeling the cold grit of it under my bare feet i leap because i don’t remember how to dive, how to slice through the water like a hot blade, and it’s a brief slap then release. water changes shape to accommodate its container–it has no intrinsic form, no arms to hold you, a million masks instead of a face but its surface can be deceptively hard we were on the golden gate bridge standing by the yellow suicide phones and i was naive–i didn’t know that from such heights water is more like a mirror it resists it breaks your body it likes its shape, thank you very much from the distance of a diving board, on the other hand, it stings but it accepts i’m at the bottom of the pool holding my breath and trying to listen even if the words are blurred and distorted, i know they are there and worth hearing

kerry, this blathe sliced through *me* like a hot blade, jesus. water as "a million masks instead of a face," water "as mirror" from great heights--only you could write something so gorgeous about the act of slipping under.

"Precipice" also reminded me of this. Damn, you have a way with images, kerry. This felt like an absorbing dream. Notorious misreader here, but the second time around I imagined it's from the perspective of someone who survived something a friend didn't (maybe depression, whether it's literally about jumping off a bridge or not).

'precipice' is absolutely gorgeous. thank you, e-o-i. :) i am also a notorious misreader! ha. but at the same time, i dunno if misreading is any different from just readin'.
