the lifeguards used to get me to help keep watch cause i was a good swimmer and knew first aid from my babysitting course i got to sit in the tall chairs sometimes i helped with the city-wide lifeguard competition i loved those lifeguards one of them taught me some synchronized swimming moves i used to start my day with fifty laps i practically lived in my bathingsuit i swam every day for hours and hours i taught diving, i loved backdiving i dove off the high and the low i watched people, summers come and go i could swim the whole length of the pool underwater with one breath i beat everyone in every race, even my boyfriend, and he was fast it was like we had our own little swimming club we took photo's sometimes sometimes i wish we'd taken more several years the pool threw birthday parties for me, everybody got free hotdogs (or tofudogs) and cake i thought that was great, cause even though i got lots of food and gifts at my home parties it was always just family no friends invited but at the pool i had lots of friends some i only saw in summers one from the town i now live another from an old town some i went to school with some moved away and i never saw again i loved that pool i loved the showers the fresh coats of paint and cubbies and listening to all the languages i signed the petitions to keep it open when i moved away, it closed down, a couple summers after, it was paved over there are less pools in vancouver than there used to be that was the last pool i ever swam in
