"staying up late is a form of procrastination," he said. when the next day will be filled with more working yourself to the point of seriously debating stress leave, only to be told you're not doing enough... you do what you have to do.

maybe we should start writing lists of what we're thankless for so we can make plans to get rid of all the bullshit.

This weekend has been set aside for the act of giving thanks. What that means is everyone sits in the living room sipping gin and tonic being grateful for family and warmth and togetherness, while I do the thankless work of feeding everyone. Two hours in the kitchen yesterday making soup and a pumpkin pie. It will be another few hours today making a main course for the vegetarians and an apple pie. Not to mention the hours spent cleaning the house and doing laundry in advance of my brother and his wife coming to stay. It’s hard to be thankful when your role is thankless—when you’re the one chopping and stirring and making sure everything is perfect while you’re excluded from the conversation because you can’t hear a word anyone is saying from the kitchen. No one offered to help. No one came to keep me company while I rolled out pie crust. I don’t want to be bitter. I am thankful for this family. I’m thankful for the ability to feed them. But being a wife, being a mother, being the homemaker, is an endlessly thankless job and I feel so lonely inside it, especially when everyone is talking and laughing a room away while I’m peeling potatoes. In the kitchen I let Adrianne Lenker and Big Thief keep me company. I listened to her sing: “I can’t see me, I can’t see. You can’t see me.” This isn’t a song about motherhood. But it could be.

thanklessgiving should be a holiday, if only to give us the recognition we deserve.

I like this idea, nr. All the people who feel invisible could get together the day after Thanksgiving and eat the leftovers off paper plates so we don't have to do any dishes.
