nr "i think [angel_olsen, julien_baker, and i] find touching points and then dig in, in order to get right to the core of the issue. people who listen to our music are in touch with their feelings and emotions and, from the fans that i talk to, some of them don’t always know how to express themselves in words and our songs help them do that. it means the world to look out into an audience that is deeply connecting to each artist in a different way." 220814

raze it might not be her best album, but "epic" will always be the one i love most. maybe because it was the first one i heard.

it was my emotional compass during a strange, soul-destroying late winter and early spring eleven years ago. some part of who i was then will always be embedded in those songsin the desperate, doomed prayer of "don't do it", the blind march toward truth of "dsharpg", and the battered hope of "one day". no matter how much time passes, "love_more" will always rip me apart and stitch me back together, leaving me a little more shopworn but better for having been broken.

the power of her artistry is even more striking when you consider it in the context of the decade-long relationship she had with an abusive addict who walled her off from everyone she cared about. he told her she was nothing. he was threatened by her talent, so he made it his mission to convince her she had no value as a writer or a human being.

she had to get away from him to find her voice and recognize her own worth. and look at her now.

her growth is our gain.
