i took my favourite vase
my antique copper vase
and i hid it in the creek
i thought it would be safe
there i thought "if the house burns,
i know it will be safe in the creek"
dad handed it to me today
said "look what i found outside"
i was utterly surprised
in all of the confusion
i had forgotten about it
i thought it was in my room
this whole time i thought it was
resting on the brass stand nigh my bed
why hadn't i noticed?
it wasn't there, it wasn't
where it should be
what's up with me?
i don't know how it is
that i left it there
in the water
all autumn
all winter
neglected but safe
it was covered
over by leaves
painted with mud
buried by ice
i tried cleaning it
with a sponge and some soap
made a game of it with my nephew
think i only made it worse
it looks so funny now
stupid of me, stupid

silly
funny and stupid
i know, it's nothing
just a vase
just a vase i got at the market
just an old vase i bought from a lady
for less than ten dollars
just a pitcher, just a vase

i know of knows
where it was made
a mystery its age
normally i keep
feathers in it
feathers from ravens
treasures from eagles
tokens from beaches
just a vase i keep feathers in

just a nothing
but i love it
and i can't believe myself
it looks funny now
sad, but interesting
