raze there are four of them sitting in the shade of a kentucky coffee tree.

"excuse me," the man on the left says. "could you help me please? sir? you take our picture."

he hands me his phone. i watch four small boxes find their faces. i press down on the white circle beside their bodies. nothing happens.

"we come from africa," he says. "there we have genocide. for example, myself, i have been shot at with three magazine. sh-sh-sh-sh-sh. like this. like this. the god protect me. i don't know if it was a catastrophe fix. here i have only one year and four months. this one has twelve years? more than ten years. living here it is a good country. especially the problem we had. but you have forgotten him. because god is the one to provide everything."

he points at the sky.

"we have to honour him," he says. "we have to humble ourselves. to reserve some time to pray. to think of him. he's coming. he's coming soon. many many many things showing that. he's coming. we end. we die. where are we going? we don't know where we are going. but we know that we shall go somewhere. then you have to prepare. to be prepared is to have a good heart. to help each other. i ask what you have seen. i have seen people love each other. many people when we came here helped me. i didn't have anywhere to sleep. even this clothes i have been given by the people here. they love each other. i see. only one thing i didn't see is connection."

his friends are rafael, jeanette, and genevieve. his name is french. bonne aventure. he never stops smiling.

he says he doesn't see any pictures. he shows me what to do. you don't apply pressure to the circle. you let your finger hover over it. the interface does the rest of the work for you.

i try again. i hear three soft clicks. i can't tell if any of the shots are in focus. i hand him back his phone.

"thank you," he says. "god bless you."
