birdmad dreams_within_dreams

i spent ages one afternoon trying to wake up from what seemed like several layers of dreams, each of which seemed stranger than the one before it.

woke from a dream about sex to find myself being murdered, which woke me into a strange hike through an unfamiliar mountainside neighborhood where an endless succession of wrong turns found me lost until i got chased in to someone's backyard bougainvillea which woke me into an elaborate misadventure involving my repeated failure to bake a red velvet cake from scratch until i ran outside screaming and got water thrown on me by somebody whose face i can't remember which finally woke me up into reality to find a chubby kitty standing on my bladder letting me know i needed to get up and go.

the next day i watched Inception for the first time and nearly messed myself over the level of coincidence at play

raze i had my first dream within a dream when i was eleven or twelve.

i was sliding down a waterfall. it was loud and vivid and terrifying. there was nothing dream-like about it. i was going to die.

just before the current whipped me into the plunge pool, my sister (who was about four at the time) smacked me in the back of the head with the silver latch plate of her carseat seatbelt.

i woke up next to her on the bench seat of my stepfather's van. she had this really grown_up expression of disdain on her face, as if she wanted to say, "serves_you_right for dreaming of waterfalls. you're lucky i was here to save you."

i rubbed the back of my head. i was grateful, but did she have to hit me so hard? that shit hurt.

then i woke up alone in my waterbed. it took me a minute to work out that it wasn't another false awakening. my fingers found the back of my head just to be sure.
