ovenbird The bees are awake. And all at once the cherry trees are full of buzzing bodies looking for a way to start again. They’ve devoured every crumb in their winter larder and, stomachs empty, have left the hive to find a world awash in nectar. How impossible this must seem. Just on the brink of starvation they are saved by some amber god with tourmaline wings who shakes pollen loose from reluctant hearts. Amazed, they rise in a cloud of humming gratitude until there are almost as many bees as blossoms. I follow a bumblebee with my eyes, furred abdomen nearly as large as a ping pong ball, and I never doubt that it knows the shape of joy. It stumbles from one delight to the next, its limbs heavy with gold dust, its mouth full of sweetness. I know something of its honeyed rapture, for every day I wake to words that seep from the comb and I eat them thick on buttered toast. I couldn’t be sure that winter would end. But it did. It did. 260406
