raze this song has such a weird rhythm, he said. it's like, i'm tired, but i've still got my groove. and if you listen closely, you can hear paul lose his place in the second verse and hit a bum note before his fingers right themselves and dance across the skinny neck of his hofner bass. that's what we're missing now: the willingness to make mistakes and own them in pursuit of something transcendent. 220730

raze i was lucky enough to catch it on cjam friday night. i'd almost forgotten what a great song it is. felt like catching up with an old friend. it made me smile. so did your words here.

i gotta say, finally hearing everything that came before "the_white_album" in mono a few years back was a revelation. so many of those songs hit so much harder without the weird early stereo panning. "hey bulldog" and "the word" sound enormous. "sgt. pepper" was never my favourite beatles album (sacrilege, i know), but hearing it the way it sounded to most of the people who were around when it was fresh in 1967 was like listening with a whole new set of ears.

"with a little help from my friends" almost made me cry the first time i heard it with every instrument and vocal track pancaked together in the center of the sound world. it probably would have done that to me anyway, though.
