raze "i would like to bring to people something like happiness. i would like to discover a method so that if i want it to rain, it will start right away to rain. if one of my friends is ill, i'd like to play a certain song and he will be cured; when he'd be broke, i'd bring out a different song and immediately he'd receive all the money he needed." 130508

epitome of incomprehensibility Thanks. I hadn't heard this.

Sometimes I think I can get an idea of musicians by listening to their music. Probably fanciful of me... but Coltrane's music makes me think he had a great deal of empathy and imagination - the same impression this quote gives.

unhinged i read quite a bit of jazz history in my undergrad, went to a lot of jazz concerts, and hung out with a lot of jazz musicians.

the first two were nothing like the last one for me. just like you could expect brass players to be pompous, and string players to be temperamental, you could expect jazzers to party.

then i started going to jazz band concerts blitzed and suddenly it all made sense to me. especially the way james played the flugelhorn.

raze "when i listen to john coltrane, that man tells me the story of his life just by playing what he plays. he tells me about chicago and he tells me about new york and harlem. he tells me about being a musician and he tells me all of his love just by what he plays."
