raze there's a story about 'trane that i love, though i can't remember anymore where i read it. and it may be more legend than truth. but as maxwell scott says in "the man who shot liberty valence", when the legend becomes fact, print the legend. so, paraphrasing a little, and working from memory...

one night in the studio, during his stint in miles davis' most famous sextet, coltrane plays a long, winding sax solo that moves miles to ask, "why'd you play so long, man?"

"i just had to get it all out," coltrane says softly.

fast-forward to a live date sometime later. 'trane has just finished blowing the rest of the band off the stage with the "sheets of sound" approach he's been developing. miles storms into the wings at the end of the set, furious.

"i'm sorry, miles," coltrane says, walking after him. "i just had to get it out. what was i supposed to do?"

miles turns, and in his inimitable raspy voice, he snarls: "try taking the horn out of your mouth!"
