i remember one sunset me a friend where leaving to go out to eat. we walked to the car i noticed that everything was purple. the sunset bathed the whole neighborhood i a purple glow. i was so amaized that i could hardly move. after i pointed it out to my friend he just said "oh ya, its purple. lets go." he loves to ruin moments

this red is the humble end of a sunset, the last few rays of protest before night puts the horison to bed.

i still owe myself that one single sunset. ever since that night when i watched the sun setting and was torn apart i haven't been able to face it again. i'll see one and quickly glance away before i have to face myself again. but that one sunset is still there, waiting for me.

according to my phone, sunset is at 7:46 pm. at 7:40 louie and i go out to find it. the streets are eerily silent. there's a cozy, yeasty smell in the air, the smell of baking bread. the sky is mostly a periwinkle blue. i can see pink above some of the houses, more south than i expected, and we chase it. on mole street, a man stands on his stoop smoking a cigar, his bald head and ears sunburnt to a crisp. he nods politely as we pass. three little girls are playing with their dolls a couple doors down. just before we hit oregon avenue i hear a child in a red brick house holler, "you son of a bitch!" we're too late--we missed it. louie doesn't care, but i'm disappointed. we'll go out earlier tomorrow.
