i first saw this when i was twelve years old, during summer vacation, while eating fritos scoops & drinking mystic iced tea.

a struggling singer/composer is visited by three angels who promise him fame, love, happiness & anything else he might want. he signs [or sings, rather] the cosmic contract. instant gratification. one of the angels starts shooting him suggestive looks. he wants her. she wants him. she pisses off the higher powers & becomes a mortal. he gets her. he becomes obsessed with & possessed by his work & fame. he reaches a point where it no longer satisfies him, illustrated by greasy hair and manic cries of "clap clap!" he then decides he wants to die. tragedy. bells. carol laure. the end.

a second glimpse was afforded a few months back when it materialized on the box. something of an obscure film [at least to my knowledge], it certainly belongs to its decade. nick mancuso leavens the cheese factor somewhat, but his brooding ends up feeling a bit out of place. the fact that leonard cohen wrote the lyrics to the songs is somewhat amusing, given their over-the-top delivery.

watching this film for the second time, the added years & "maturity" allowing me to see it in a very different way, i was struck with something crawling toward nostalgia. it isn't something i often experience. just the memory of a time when everything seemed a bit brighter & i didn't know nearly as much as i do now. the sweet didn't reek of saccharine bullshit. i collected mystic iced tea caps. i still have a bag full of them, most of which are sticky & stained light brown. i stopped drinking it years ago. one day it just tasted too fucking sweet, almost repugnant.

that's a cheese factory for you.
clap clap.

raze lately i find myself wishing i could catch this on television again some enchanted afternoon or early evening. some part of me is still a little bit in love with carole laure. and there's something in the marriage between lewis furey's music and leonard cohen's lyrics that grows more appealing with the passage of time.

nostalgia: it's what's for dinner.

raze "i burnt the house of love tonight
it made a perfect ring
in which i saw some weeds and stone
beyond not anything

certain creatures of the air
frightened by the night
they came to see the world again
and they perished in the light

so now i sail from sky to sky
and all the blackness sings
against the boat that i have made
of mutilated wings

fire in this house of mine
fire of my own design
fire from the sky
fire from the sea
come fire, come
fire onto thee
fire in the house of love"
