i kept telling newsom she was a nut today when she followed me two thirds of the way around the park. but i think she's a little too big to be classified as a proper nut. so i'm going to go with cashews. i used to devour those kidney-shaped bits of heaven like they were the only thing keeping me alive. i still love them in a stir-fry. (as for newsom, her answer would probably be, "whatever nut you happen to be carrying today." but she seems to have a special fondness for walnuts.)

i am like newsom, apparently, in that i love walnuts. i'd say they're my favourite. i first read this as "who is your favorite nut" and immediately thought of my cat nephew. i've all but renamed him nut. i say "hi nut! how are ya?" and he meows back. the last time i hung out with him, was winding up to pounce, and i warily asked "what are you going to pounce on?" the only things in that direction were my stuff. he pounced on nothing. i said "what? what did you see?" and he lazily said "meow" and walked away.

Pistachios to eat by themselves. Pecans in some mixtures, pine nuts in others.

It's pecans for me, in a variety of forms! They're good plain but also make an excellent crust for cheesecake if you can't have gluten. They're good in tarts (but never with raisins). We make a salad at Christmas with cranberries and pears and spicy candied pecans. They are essential in trail mix.

I also have to go with cashews, strongly preferring wholes over halves. The texture is just right. They are unjustfiably expensive as a snack compared to peanuts but nice as an indulgence. In-shell peanuts were always my favorite ballpark snack. Even before I knew it. Before I was old enough to realize how gross hot_dogs and "nacho_cheese" were, how cotton_candy and popcorn were mostly just air, and that I didn't like bread enough to like big soft pretzels. I liked it all when I was little. But now, going about the little ritual of breaking the shell and extracting each nut is as satisfying to me now as it's always been. And I'm hopelessly addicted to salt. It'll probably be what kills me. No_regrets.
