pistachios

i
never
had
pistachios
as
a
kid
then
i
fell
in
love
with
alice
and
one
saturday
afternoon
we
ate
pistachios
at
her
grandmother's
mobile
park
home
i
can't
say
that
i've
loved
them
ever
since
but
i
most
definitely
love
them
now
especially
the
spicey ones
just
now
i
looked
across
the
street
to
safeway
and
thought

A
favourite
snack
of
my
mother
’s.
They
used
to
dye
them
red
.
A
bright
mask
to
hide
imperfections
in
the
shell
so
they
would
be
more
appealing
to
picky
consumers
.
My
mother
ate
them
in
bed
.
Two
bowls.
One
for
nuts
,
one
for
shells.
Her
fingers
were
stained
for
days
.
Sometimes
she
let
me
taste
one
.
I
remember
the
dry
clack
of
discarded
hulls,
the
smear
of
carmine,
like
lipstick,
across
my
face
,
the
way
my
mother
flipped
channels
during
commercials
,
the
papery pistachio
skin
stuck
between
my
teeth
,
the
elemental
taste
of
salt
.
