as a kid
then i fell in love with alice
and one saturday afternoon

ovenbird A favourite snack of my mother’s.

They used to dye them red. A bright mask to hide imperfections in the shell so they would be more appealing to picky consumers. My mother ate them in bed. Two bowls. One for nuts, one for shells. Her fingers were stained for days. Sometimes she let me taste one. I remember the dry clack of discarded hulls, the smear of carmine, like lipstick, across my face, the way my mother flipped channels during commercials, the papery pistachio skin stuck between my teeth, the elemental taste of salt.
