raze i try to avoid these as much as possible, because most of them are moronic and devoid of any heart or creativity, if not downright offensive.

they do make some good ones in other countries, though. this one hit me in a happy place:

flux i'm strongly anti-advertisement in all forms. the entire art is designed to remove an individual's agency, and the culture promotes manufactured desire and buying Shit You Don't Need. the only advertisement i see regularly these days is on the subway (dr. zizmor; airbnb is good for nyc), which is always vaguely interesting from an anthropological standpoint. when i do occasionally encounter video ads, through friends tv or internet connections, i'm more than often confused; sometimes i can't for the life of me figure out what they're trying to sell.

"advertising is to our culture what lead plumbing was to the romans."

epitome of incomprehensibility I guess I can't rouse the same philosophical dislike, since if you look at things with a certain tilt of the head almost anything could be an ad. Someone's clothes could be seen as advertising their personality (or, more cynically, how rich and stylish they want you to think they are).

The thing that annoys me most about commercials is their repetition. The idea is that people will buy things they're more familiar with, and it's manipulative in a way to create a false familiarity, even if no one's being forced to buy anything.

But sometimes repetition can backfire. At a certain point I found the Koodo ads so annoying I vowed never to buy anything of theirs. And sometimes, rarely, exposure to ads will be actually useful: you'll see something that's helpful to you and that makes sense for you to get. But generally people do that, not commercials.

raze speaking of whichthe sid vicious version of "my way" is now being used to sell the acura TLX. "punk is dead" would be a gross overreaction, but something about that performance being used that way doesn't quite sit right. 140906
