Occasional impulse purchases are the fault of one specific store near my house that specializes in tea and stationery supplies. I have been known to impulse buy loose leaf rooibos at the same time as fountain pen ink.

The strangest thing I've ever bought impulsively (perhaps) is a small cervical traction device that is supposed to stretch the vertebrae in your neck gently. Instagram showed it to me in a targeted ad during the pandemic when I started getting frequent migraines. I thought it might help and ordered one. It didn't help.

raze these_days it's secondhand books for me, though once_upon_a_popsicle i was compelled to buy every interesting-looking journal i saw. my bedroom closet is full of books bereft of words, from pocket pals to expansive beauties with sewn-in ribbon bookmarks.

as for the strangest thing i've ever bought on a whim ... that's a tough one. maybe one of those voice transformer toys when i was long past the age of being a part of the target market. i still have it, though dust has dulled its colour and the battery is just about dead. now anything i say into the makeshift microphone comes out sounding like the tired moaning of some battered beast.

i'd call that a pretty straight translation of the source.
