I was so excited by the seductive glisten of a perfectly ripe blackberry that it was in my mouth before I truly thought things through. “Maybe not the greatest idea to eat a pee-level blackberry,” my brother said. The truth of this was immediately apparent. My own dog could easily have lifted a leg over that particular bramble bordering this popular walking path. But it was too late. The summer’s bounty was already sloshing around in my anxious stomach filling my guts with parasites and intrusive_thoughts. I briefly considered googling “is it dangerous to eat trace amounts of dog pee.” But I figured that would set my algorithm off in a variety of unpleasant directions for weeks to come. So I refrained and said, as nonchalantly as I could, “I’ve been eating these blackberries for years, and I haven’t died yet.” As if that meant anything at all about my recent ingestion of contaminated fruit. Nearly two weeks later I seemed to be suffering no ill effects, but I couldn’t stop thinking about it until I discovered that due to the earth’s perpetual water cycle, it’s likely that every water molecule on earth has passed, thousands of times, through the urethra of some living organism. This made me feel better somehow. Turns out I’ve been drinking urine my whole life just as a matter of course. My brain let go of the pee soaked blackberry, and turned to other more pressing threats like cyclospora, and the apocalypse. So I’m basically back to normal now. In case anyone was worried.
