blackberries
ovenbird On late summer walks, as the sky starts reeling in the light and the spiders begin building the webs that they will die in, I reach out a careful hand and pull concentrated heat from twisted brambles, and taste the season’s end. I forage like I’m preparing for the coming dark. My hands are stained with the blood of blackberries, the seeds stick in my teeth. I share some with my dog who swallows them whole, never experiencing the tart shock of finding a berry that is not quite ripe. I make a cup of my hand and fill it to the brim. What more is there than this: humming love songs while eating the sun? 250809

nr i love this image of blackberry-eating.

every time i eat blackberries, i remember my mom saying "they're tart," kind of as a downside of the fruit.

i like the tartness. they're sweet and tart. the most realistic of fruits.

ovenbird Thank you nr! I like their tartness as well, and "the most realistic fruits" made me laugh. So unlike watermelon which insists on being either sweet or bland and refuses to engage with the more complex flavours. Now a kiwi...there's a fruit that knows something about being unexpected--sweet, tart, and (in such a surprising twist) hairy! 250809
