news_from_the_boss
epitome of incomprehensibility Dear B., please don't die in Iran. You owe me $184 dollars.

...But this started in December. Like news_from_the_ex, it involved a mom: my boss's mother died in December. He'd been in Iran with her during her sickness - he could run the tutoring centre from there, albeit on altered hours.

When he told me the news, I expressed condolences, worried I would sound stiff but wanting to be compassionate. The news made me oddly sad, too, even though I didn't know her. Partly because of the story, the sense of crushed hopes: see, she'd had emergency surgery and seemed to be recovering at first. But she passed away only a few days later.

Early January, things were back to business: someone wanted to book more classes. He arranged that. The classes were done.

And now I'm worried. I messaged him three days ago and he's not answering. It might just be the (at least partial) internet blackout imposed by the Iranian government, but protesters are getting killed and I'm worried for him. I said that I hoped he was safe, especially if he was still "overseas" - not wanting to be too specific in the case of censorship or crackdown - and then I told him about a website glitch.

Heck, he could be back in Canada and stewing over the seeming callousness of the juxtaposition. But I doubt it.
