microwave
raze i don't remember much about the one we had before this. the one that died and was replaced with something that was borrowed until its owner told us to go ahead and keep it and it became ours. the old microwave was white. it had a turntable that did what it was supposed to do. i could watch my food move while it sunned itself. this one is black. unless the glass tray is hiding something, it has no carousel. it just sits there. not that it matters much. all's well that ends warmer than it was when i slammed the door in its face. it's been months since i've used the microwave for anything. sometimes i forget it's even there. i was in the kitchen the other night when it started heating a nonexistent meal. i didn't touch it. there were no numbers running down on the control panel. the light came on, the transformer started humming, and for ten seconds i stood spellbound. then it fell silent. either the brain of the beast is breaking down, or this house is haunted by hungry ghosts. which would explain some things. 261008

nr i was ill for the first few days in vancouver. it was a few days before i found out it was strep throat and began treatment. the first day we arrived, we were supposed to go out and buy appliances and housewares for my apartment, but i was feeling lethargic and unwell, so my mom went and got them on her own. all i remember her saying when she returned was that she'd bought me a microwave. "what colour is it?" i asked. "red," she said. i wasn't quite sure i'd heard her right.

twenty years later and 2000 miles from its home, it's still being used. it's just a bit lighter in colour than blather_red.
