I search through dark I stand in dark I give in to dark I’m consumed by dark I let it wrap my heart Parasitic worm Darkening the blood Headed to my brain Let myself out into the cold Emptiness needs its space Wander nothing, step by step Each one draining warmth Darkness finds its home Down the depths of despair I find A low fire keeping itself alive Clutching hopeful light Guarding kindness from the expanse I gaze, eyes lose focus Enraptured, i observe Immediately longing for the glow’s warmth As i outstretch The bitter void relents The fire roars It searches my soul And gifts One small, powerful Ember

and yet an ember will fade, or simply cease to exist without a spark. a flame. fuel to keep it burning. a spark that can be missed with a poorly timed blink. a gaze away. the wrong eyes. leaving me feeling sorry for anyone who misses it. misses you.

"Ember" always feels warmer than "amber," and I don't know if it's only what they represent or something about the vowels. "A" is chilled, preserving the colour of flame but not the spark. "E" smolders, threatening or comforting or a come-on. Come on, gather by the fire. Mid-vowels lean against lips, closer than the remote low ones, standing alone like stars.
