Talked about music and different uses of augmented sixth chords at Wave Hill today with Julian - realized how much I love the French augmented sixth. So interesting how augmented sixths can only be used in certain ways in classical harmony, whether the obstacles arise due to voice leading, tendencies, etc. Our ear just processes some things in certain ways. Thinking about it, it should make sense that an augmented sixth would be able to resolve to a predominant like a two chord, which would then lead to a five, but then the bass line would be doing weird chromatic things… But the French would already have the root of the two chord in it, so maybe it would be more acceptable to the ear? I’ll have to check it out on the piano. Nathaniel, Eli, Julian and I went to see Chris Thile’s Mandolin Concerto at Carnegie. I wasn’t a huge fan, but his first improvisation was absolutely beautiful. It’s always great to see Appalachian Spring performed, though, especially by a group as amazing as Orpheus; I loved that they added more string players - it made the sound so lush. I also adored Clint Needham’s piece about Alzheimer’s, When We Forgot. Made me cry! It was inspired by this poem: We Are Forget by Gary Glazner We are the words we have forgotten. We are shifting and pacing. We wrote this poem. It’s a pretty poem. Can you bake a cherry pie? Never more, never more. We have no horizon. We don’t recall washing or eating or what you just said. Ask me my name. Ask me if I have children? You’re a pretty lady. You have beautiful eyes. Wash me, put me to bed clean, hold me as I fall asleep. Give me a kiss, brush my hair. You are my daughter? Light washing over us moment, moment. You’re a handsome man. Our hand writing is beautiful twists and loops of letters we can’t remember our hands. Our ears are wishful we can’t remember our ears. We can speak every language, we can’t remember our mouths. We are porous. We are the past. We are forget.
