i was trying to untangle what it is about her voice that i've always found comforting. it's her vibrato. it's fast and almost manic. it sounds like she's squeezing the end of each note with wet hands to keep it from getting away. it should be jarring, but it isn't. it's tender somehow. if a hug that lasted longer and meant more than you expected it to had a sound, i think it would be something like that.

i’ve always loved “trouble me,” “jealousy,” and her live cover of neil young’s “after the gold rush.”

"wonder" was the one that always got me for some reason. every time it came on the radio, i felt happy-sad butterflies hatching in my chest without understanding what was happening or why. oh, music. the things you do to me.

i can't tell you how many times my mom and i have sung "wonder" together in the car as she shuttled us around before i got my drivers license. a radio station here called ann arbor's 107.1 plays songs from "tigerlily" in high rotation like it just came out this year (not that i'm complaining). fun fact: 107.1 has kelly brown as one of their dj's, she was formerly on 89x, albeit before i worked there. martin bandyke, formerly of wdet, is also a dj there, though i find his constant enthusiasm on the air to be quite irritating.
