make_your_own_stereotypes
epitome of incomprehensibility A memory that surfaced about my boss B. led to this thought: if you're going to generalize wide swaths of people, at least make your own stereotypes. DOn't go around borrowing other people's!

This is not actual advice. But it's what he did at times.

Circa 2017: "Indian guys are good with technology but bad at teaching it."

What was that based on? The experience he had with a computer science tutor who was less than enthused about teaching. Never mind that our best electrical engineering tutor at the time came from India (maybe because she was a woman, his generalization didn't count??)

Then again, half-formed stereotype lurked in my brain, coaxed into nebulous being from the experience working admin in that office. At least they aren't super negative, just silly:

-Electrical engineering is feminine, mechanical engineering is masculine.

-Most grad students in electrical and mechanical engineering are Iranian. Not some - most.

-Everyone hates partial differential equations.
