exes
tender_square when her soon-to-be second ex-husband found out that she'd run into her first ex-husband, he was bothered.

"i know i don't really have a right to be upset," he said. "but it reminds me of when you and i first got together, when you drove down your old street and saw him and went inside and talked for a while."

"but this was different," she explained, even though she didn't have to. "i wasn't driving down his street. he just happened to be at the intersection i stopped at. and i felt that i *had* to talk to him; the universe has made our paths cross several times now."

there was a part of him that looked crestfallen from his bed, as she stood at the doorway to the bedroom.

"you said he might be single again, and now you're single..."

"are you saying that you think i'm going to get back together with my first ex?" she cried.

"maybe?"

"no!" she exhaled sharply. "that ship has sailed! i've been there and done that!" she laughed at the implication.

"i just worry that i could be in a place where i get shut out of your life the way that he was," he said.

it was true, that had happened with her first ex, but it was at her second husband's insistence. their divorce wasn't mutual; her ex had left notes and pictures in her belongings she'd found later about how much he wanted her back. she had wanted to stay friends but knew it wasn't good for either man. and so she said she couldn't talk to him again and that was that.

she and her first ex-husband hadn't spoken since their divorce was finalized eight years ago. then, there they were, looking at older versions of one another in the middle of the afternoon with so much in their lives having past in those ten minutes of speaking.
