earthquake
silence you laid your head on my lap and asked me how it felt to be a human pillow. i said it felt good.

if i was honest, i would have said that it was the most frightening place i have been in a very long time.

Rogers said seismologists haven't figured out why the ETS phenomenon happens every 14 months in the Pacific Northwest..."

nom "...Residents of southern British Columbia can breathe easier now that the window of increased probability in which a major earthquake could strike the region closed sooner than expected.

Seismologists at the Pacific Geoscience Centre in Sidney, B.C. say the latest episode of subterranean tremors on Vancouver Island than began Jan. 26 has ended about a week earlier than usual.

"The tremors stopped about 24 hours ago," Natural Resources Canada seismologist John Cassidy told CTV.ca Sunday morning in a phone interview from Sidney, B.C.

This means the heightened risk that a magnitude 9.0 or higher earthquake could strike, accompanied by a tsunami equal to the size of and strength of what hit the Sumatra-Andaman Islands in 2004, has significantly weakened..."

We are so unbelievably lucky, this all seems so unreal

Isaou Crazy crazy. Aftershocks are a constant reminder that it did really happen 100904

raze a few days ago we had one about twenty miles away. i guess what made its way to us was the aftershock phase. as far as i know it's the first time i've experienced any part of an earthquake. our house shook for a few seconds. i thought the oven exploded, somehow, in the quietest way possible. but no. it was the last gasp of a little quake, with a lowly magnitude of 3.6. 180421

unhinged fracking is taking over ohio ... maybe it was a residual earthquake caused by fracking

seismologists say this area is due for a huge one, possible 9.0 or bigger. i have no idea what to do in an earthquake. sometimes when i get really high i start to get vaguely panicky about a damn earthquake...

ovenbird I’ve lived in Cascadia almost 20 years and while there are minor earthquakes in the area constantly I’ve only felt a handful of them. The first time, the jolt that woke me felt like the hypnic jerks that sometimes startle me out of early sleep. I experienced a sensation of falling and found myself grasping desperately for something to hold on to. I’ve never gotten used to the constant threat of seismic apocalypse. Every small tremor sends me on a scavenger hunt around my house checking all my emergency kits and supplies. These include water, non perishable food ration bars, grab and go disaster bags full of flashlights and first aid kits and thermal blankets and tube tents, water filtration devices, and matches. I would be kidding myself if I pretended that a recent acquisition of two folding kayaks didn’t have something to do with assuring me that I will be able to paddle off this island delta if the tsunami leaves us underwater. The problem is, I’m not sure any of these things will be of any use at all if the Big One comes for us. I live in a near constant state of low level anxiety wondering when the earth will liquefy beneath me, sucking me into a silty hell, and filling my lungs with mud. 250915

ancasa.reyn i was awakened
early this morning
by an earthquake

i have experienced
quite a few
since moving
to the bay area
but never has one
kicked me from
a deep sleep

at first
i wasn't sure
i hadn't dreamt
my fourth floor
swaying
so i immediately
checked my
quake notifications
to confirm that
indeed a 4.3 temblor
across the bay
was recorded

the weird thing
about quakes
in the middle
of the night
is having to decide
whether or not
to go back to sleep

which i did

a few hours ago
an aftershock
rolled through

the building i live in
was built in 1904
or 1905 or 1906
which would mean
it survived
the last big one

or maybe
the last big one
is yet to come
