one little tree stopped the truck from plunging into the ravine i grabbed my baby brother and my dolls clinging to the front seat watching everything ahead rushing towards us moving so fast the brakes had failed and the block of wood had shifted i could hear my mother screaming my parents shouting as they ran down the hill after us my eyes closed i wished like heck for something to and something did stop the truck one little tree i remember it wasn't much taller than i was and i was small it was one single tree surrounded by empty mulch we could have missed it but we didn't i remember the smell of the dirt when i got out and cried looking down into the depths the tops of trees and violent waters the smell of old moist earth the boughs of a baby cedar
