alternative'radio
birdmad suddenly feeling his age i guess it was inevitable since they had long since ceased to be much of an alternative to anything of late, but in a way i am sad to know that the alternative station that has been the soundtrack to my activities since just before i was old enough to drink has been sold and will be turning into another spanish station...i wouldn't mind if it was a station playing rock in spanish, there are some cool spanish language rock bands out there, but it will likely be another redneck ranchera/campesina station playing that godawful "banda" shit that just seems inescapable these days around

soon The Edge will be no more, and it will be another fossil in the sediment of my memory like my beloved low power AM station, KUKQ before it

my youth is truly disappearing behind me
my first taste of the music that has been in my life disappeared when i was just starting high school, KSTM, 106 FM where i heard Peter Gabriel, REM and Pink Floyd and U2 for the first time, KEYX 100.3 where i heard the Dead Milkmen, Concrete Blonde, Wall of Voodoo and The Mighty Lemon Drops and The Smiths, KZZP 104.7 the top-40 station that had the balls to occasionally throw a curveball with things like Siouxsie and The Banshees, The Cure, Depeche Mode and KUKQ 1060 (which had in my childhood been the
R & B station i listened to in my formative, funky years where i heard hip-hop in the days when it was being born before becoming a terrible country-western station) was the place where i heard Bauhaus and Joy Division for the first time, Sisters of Mrcy, Mission UK, New Model Army, Husker Du, Clan of Xymox, Shriekback, House of Love, THe The, Ministry, and of course Nine Inch Nails, and as the Q was breathing its last, along came the Edge, introducing me to ALice In Chains, Pearl Jam, Nirvana, TooL, Pigface, Big Black, Machines of Loving Grace, Marilyn Manson and others while still giving me reminders of what their predecessors had given me

perhaps this is for the best, they had become a shadow of what made them entertaining in the first place and the addition of Howard Stern to the morning program block didn't score them any extra points in my book...and i wont miss the barrage of Korn and Limp Bizkit tracks much, and i won't miss the Metallica tracks or any of the other assorted interchangable rap-metal hybrids that have come to dominate the rotation

i come not to praise but to bury

gimme a handful of dirt to throw on the grave of alternative radio

i always knew this day would come
