raze dandelions fight to raise their heads above grass that's gone feral. brown buds bide their time in the arms of a tree too skinny and new to know what it's going to grow into. each time i kill an insect, i feel like i'm killing myself. i have no right to steal the life from anything. it should be me suffocating between folds of cellulose fibers. it should be me choking on borax. a robin runs beneath the chassis of a moving car and hops onto the median strip, still whole. a man as bald as i'll be someday lights a cigarette outside an auto repair shop that almost burned down last year. i watch dark clouds spit in his face. he stands there and takes it. a starling and a cabbage butterfly take turns skipping and gliding, daring each other to do something brilliant. baby's breath blooms on the other side of a wet window. i flush an uninjured ant down the toilet. "you'll find a way out," i say. "we all find a way." i know it isn't true. but some of us do. 220506
