raze he was a chesterfield cop. his precinct had an under_the_table deal with the adjoining township. when a call came in, whoever was closest would answer, even if it was outside their jurisdiction. one night a voice came crackling over the radio saying something about a seven-year-old girl who'd been hit by a truck in new baltimore. he wasn't far from the scene, so he went out there. he thought she was dead at first. all he could make out was a pink shirt. when he got closer, he saw her legs were moving. her eyes were open. she wasn't saying anything. just kicking to try and fight through the pain. no one else was around. he called an ambulance. they said they'd be there in fifteen minutes. he told them she wouldn't last that long. he could feel her dying in his arms. he got her to the hospital himself faster than the first responders who are paid to gun it and run red lights when they feel like showing up. they had to induce a coma to keep her brain from swelling. but she pulled through. he saved her life. everyone called him a hero. he didn't feel like one. he couldn't sleep at night. he kept seeing her legs twitching and her unblinking eyes. he was disciplined for breaking the chain of command. he lost sixty pounds. he started smoking pot to try and take the edge off. when his superior officer found out, he fired him. all he wanted was for one person to ask if he was okay. 231006
