“overwhelming at the moment,” betsy said. “i just bought my new place, i’m about to retire, i’m trying to sell this place, i’m taking care of elderly dogs,” she lifted her leashes for emphasis. i ran into her on my evening walk. i know she doesn’t remember my name but that’s okay because she’s open with me like a friend. i asked if it was her condo with the for sale sign up front. she bought five acres somewhere up north, she showed me with her hand as the mitten where it is (top of the index finger). i pet her big brown dog while the king charles spaniel ate fallen berries from the sidewalk, ignoring us. “i’ve lived here 30 years,” she said. “and because all of these things are happening simultaneously, time feels like it’s moving quicker than ever.” i want to tell her i know that feeling, the fabric of time contracting into a shrunken garment that fits like a tourniquet. i want to say that each day takes me further away from this city, makes me resolute in leaving. but i don’t.
