grandmama
tender_square he said his sister called and told him to prepare. then, he followed up and called his aunt and she conveyed the same message.

grandmama has been in hospital since last weekend. she was already recovering from a broken shoulder, but a recent uti made her loopythose infections are so much worse for the elderly, and grandmama is in her ninth decade. and so, she was admitted and nearly went into sepsis after being in the hospital's care. i was away when it all happened, taking care of my father across the border, and my husband didn't tell me what was going on because he didn't think it was serious enough. grandmama has rallied before. his uncle has joked that she will outlive us all.

a sudden arrhythmia changed all that, and grandmama's vitals weren't looking good last sunday. she seemed comatose, and her two remaining children were at her bedside, talking and holding her hand. she didn't wake until she heard from her granddaughter on speakerphone, and then she pulled through.

after two really good days came and went this week, his aunt was sure grandmama would be discharged this weekend. today, she isn't opening her eyes like she was. and now the nurses have had to put in a feeding tube.

i wish my husband would've called her like i urged him to. he was the only grandchild she hadn't heard from. it wouldn't have changed the current circumstances, i know; i just don't want him to have any regret for whatever happens next.

tender_square she liked taking care of people,” he said. “she was a child of the depression so she always thought about gifts that were useful.”

the cream crochet afghan she gave us for our first christmas lies atop our marital bed and i use it nightly to warm my side.

and last week, when i was alone and defrosting frozen peas on the stove top, i used the brass non-stick pan she gifted years ago to diffuse the flame and thought of her warmth.
