let's play. "you pop into my head randomly." i'm not sure if it's a compliment, exactly, but i enjoy the visual and the surprise element.

i have a preteen student right now that whines and complains alot. she was trying to talk her whole lesson away cause she didnt practice but i forced her to play anyways. 'youre mean' she tried to pout like a five year old. 'thank you' i said sincerely. she just busted up laughing.

sister's friend: "you talk confidently, quickly, and meekly." me: "uhhh... thanks? i think?" him: "it's a compliment." me: "except the meek part" him: "no, you sound like a librarian. you sound like someone who loves books." that's true, at least. it was odd and amusing. and a bit contradictory—it's hard to imagine someone sounding simultaneously confident and meek.

"anyone would be lucky to have you as a partner," said someone who can't currently entertain this possibility.

epitome of incomprehensibility

When I was about 22 and Lia 13 or 14, she informed me, perhaps in frustration, "You're intelligent but not very smart." It was funny how it was so blunt, how it sounded like a paradox but wasn't (the idea being that I was book-smart in some ways but needed more common sense). Now L. has a baseball cap that says #NOFILTER but I suspect she's developed a fairly robust one by now. The hat comes after the fact.
