catching_the_moment
DammitJanet it was a warm summer day... i don't recall what month or even year, but the entire day is etched into my memory.

my parents and i had been shopping at costco where we bought the usual bulk items, and were eating muffins in the car. as we turned down spruce ave. i caught a glimpse of a little boy.

his hands were pressed up against the red stained wooden fence, his left eye taking a peek through the knot, into the backyard. his light brown hair was a mess under his blue helmet, which was slipping to the back. his striped tshirt and blue shorts reminded me of the clothes i wore as a child. his bike was on its side, the front wheel facing upwards, like he had dropped it in a hurry.

he was shaded by the large maple trees that were in that backyard, but the sun still caught him. the light danced all over like fireflies in the wind. we all noticed him. even in mid-conversation, eyes on the road, things catching our eyes, we all saw him. we raced by this boy, yet the image travelled in slow motion in my mind, soaking in every detail. a boy with a bike looking through a fence. it doesn't sound like much, but it was breathtaking.

having this image all to myself saddens me because no one will truely know what i feel. it was a moment which can never be recreated for it will never have the spur-of-the-moment touch that makes the picture.

it was then that i wished i had a camera. and i have had one since.
