a_letter_to_the_sun
tt on the very last day of the year, when it was cold and dark in the woods, the animals wrote a letter to the sun.

they thought at length about what they should write and chose the most cautious words they knew.

"it's a begging letter,"said the ant. "a cordial begging letter."

almost all the animals signed their names at the bottom of the letter. only the mole, the earthworm, the moth, and the bat had their doubts. they would have preferred to have written to the moon.

hundreds of animals gathered together and threw the letter upward. the icy wind blew it into the sky, straight through the low-hanging clouds.

shivering, they sat together, waiting for an answer. as they waited they blew on their antennae and wrapped their wings around each other for warmth.

toward the end of the afternoon, a small hole suddenly appeared in the clouds. a ray of sunlight shot through and a letter drifted down.

the animals looked on, wide-eyed. the letter landed on the ground and the ant stepped forward to open it. the slug leaned on the hippopotamus's shoulder. the spider leaned on the hedgehog's shoulder, and together they read:

"dear animals,

that's fine. see you soon.

the sun"

the animals breathed a sigh of relief, nodded at each other, shook each other's wings, fins, antennae, and paws, wished each other all the very best, and went home.

that evening, most of the animals danced a few steps while quietly singing.

"see you soon, see you soon..."

then they climbed into bed and fell asleep.
