raze am i the only person alive who doesn't find this song funny at all? whenever it's sung, whatever treatment it's given, i don't hear a mockery of the nineteenth century's fashionable elite or tragedy sanitized by social niceties. i hear a woman who's about to be lynched after killing the man who seduced and deceived her. right before the rope snaps her neck, she apologizes for missing a lunch date, hoping the message will reach its intended recipient. where others would scream at their captors or beg to be spared, she's more upset to have let down one of the few people she could count on than she is by the knowledge that her life is about to end. there's no humour in having to sit with such a heavy thing in the last moments left to you. anyone who argues otherwise has never known what it is to wake up alone after thinking they'd found a friend who would still be there come morning. 260630
