raze there are more than thirty thousand homeless dogs living within the city limits of moscow, russia.

on a day-to-day basis, the moscow metro is the second most used rapid transit system in the world. a few hundred members of moscow's homeless dog population live in its stations — more during the winter.

about twenty of these dogs have learned how to use the subway as a means of transportation. after spending the day foraging and coaxing people into giving them food, they take the subway back to the suburbs for the night.

they're able to determine their routes by training themselves to remember the length of time spent on the subway train between stations, recognizing the names of places announced over the p.a. system, and remembering the way different stations smell. they even help one another to make sure they don't miss their stops.

"hey charlie! you don't get off here! it's the next stop."

"oh...right. thanks, ludmilla. you're always looking out for this old mutt."
