ovenbird When your best friend was young, back in the 60s, the fridge that stood guard over the corner of his kitchen was home to a collection of magnetic_letters. He didn’t have a complete set, and the limitation made for exciting creative possibilities. He created a whole vocabulary of magnetized words that turned into a nascent language and you and your friends helped develop it over the course of a year. It was an exclusive form of communication and you all had names bestowed upon you. Your best friend’s name has been lost to the recesses of memory and you grieve this. He has been gone nine years and now his secret name has turned to dust in your throat. You remember the word you made up for “vagina.” Figures. You remember the word forfirebecause every emerging culture has fire at the center–a place of light and warmth to gather around, a place where stories are born. You let the imagined words create a bond between you so that even in adulthood, right up until the day his heart exploded in his chest and took him from you forever, he would sometimes call you by your secret name so that you always knew who you were in the world, and where you belonged. 251010
