epitome of incomprehensibility Part of the_education_of_e_o_i is learning new words and expressions. Three today:

"orthagonal to" - unrelated, one thing not affecting the other. This was confusing at first, because in math it means a perpendicular, and perpendicular lines presumably intersect...but then there's some fancy math that says it means one variable not affecting the other, and the other meaning presumably derived from that.

"obloquy" - fierce criticism or disgrace resulting from such. I'm sure I've seen this word before and had the impression it meant something negative. I just didn't know exactly what.

"adventitious" - by chance. It sounds like "adventurous", which is a little confusing.

e_o_i Actually, why SHOULD perpendicular lines intersect? They don't have to, if they're finite.

Anyway, I wanted to add a fun one, not from school but from a friend's movie review:

"shambolic" - in shambles: chaotic, disorganized. When I first saw it, I didn't know it was the adjective form of "shambles." But it is! and it's kind of adorable.

e_o_i Today_I_learned that the French word "chevauchement" means overlap. It sounds like it should have something to do with horses, like chevauchée.

Maybe if you chevauchée too far you'll create a chevauchement, or something.

e_o_i And thanks to ovenbird, "parhelion" (Wikipedia calls it a "sun dog" and the second picture on the page now looks like the Eye of Sauron). Basically, two bright spots on each side of the sun, or a halo around it, often caused by ice in clouds. 251008
