hugging a folded-in-half pillow as he slept; this new bed of his too large for one person to feel safe, like a life raft in the middle of the sea. she was just a dream, and he knew it, but he allowed the feelings to keep him company. they were mutual, she said, but it would be foolish to dwell on the unreachable, so he let them simmer in the back of his mind; turned the burner on low. the warmth helped him to fall asleep in his empty darkened room. overnight she became the target of affections and attentions. she found a lover, if hesitantly. she became occupied. he listened to her adventures and smiled, truly and completely happy for her. sailors would speak of a tiny green cloud, rumored to have formed on the horizon, when news of bite marks reached the shore. but you know their type; always exaggerating. surely it was minuscule and dissolved by the peaceful rays of the sun before it could darken an inch of soil. in all, a normal, healthy response from a land so seasoned to suspicion and worry. he would sleep the same way; the way that worked, but with a different fantasy in his arms tonight. someone as yet unknown, but closer, he felt, for there was an itch inside his chest, and he sensed his heart was healing.
