firefly
raze i thought i'd seen the last of them. i was wrong. i_looked_out_the_window last night and saw a farrago of explosions just above ground level, silent and scattered across every lawn but mine. tiny lanterns staving off the dimming of the day. i watched them work their clustered magic until a solo dancer appeared in front of me, circling the sapling i might not live long enough to see grown. i let myself believe it was the same emerald beauty that paid me a visit a little less than a week ago, her belly brimming with life, returning to show me her flame still burned just as bright as it did the night she shared my bed. through the hinged glass of my skylight, the full_moon stood and stared me down behind a slow-moving quilt of clouds. this morning, black ghosts of still-living leaves danced in the mirror the sun made of a parked car's passenger side door. the fluttering shadows looked like they were celebrating. 220712

insouciant I caught a firefly
Cradled in my palms
It tickled my skin and i
Coaxed it to a jar

On a warm summer night
I couldn’t sleep
I watched my catch
Illuminate its home

Daylight came
I suppose i had slept
I walked to my jar
Seeing where my catch rests

I searched the jar
And found it
Lifeless on a leaf

I just hoped it would spend
One night
Away with me
