"i kinda wish i was just a teeny bit more like a sociopath. you know, just to steal a bit of their lack of empathy and caring so i could function more like an adult human." "do you know any you could model yourself after?" the therapist responded.

at one of those drug-driven house parties i attended when all i wanted was to not be here anymore, i sat cross-legged on the carpet-covered floor with erin, gord, bill, julie, and a few other people who are probably dead by now. someone said something about the house burning down. what a tragedy that would be. "not if we were all inside when it happened," i said. erin's face lit up with the best smile i ever saw her wear. she turned to me and said, "thank you for understanding me."

The body’s indignities often make space for dark hilarity. Towards the end of his life, my grandfather was in an assisted living facility. A staff member was taking him somewhere in his wheel-chair one day when he announced that he really needed to use the bathroom. The staff member suggested that he wait until he got back to his room. My grandfather said he didn’t think he could wait that long. “It’s just mind over matter!” said the chipper staff member. But my grandfather was correct. He couldn’t wait. And while sitting in the resulting mess he said, “well, I guess if you don’t mind, it don’t matter.”
