sunil turned left out of the parking lot in the same direction that deiter and his family traveled. he hadn't thought of deiter until now and figured his involvement must be similar to jetzt's. maybe he would even be where they were headed. "so where are we going?" sunil asked. he pulled down the sun visor and slipped out eisley's "room noises." he slid it into the cd player. the glassy, detached vocals matched sunil's curiousity. jetzt, sitting beside him, looked out the window at the winding asphalt road. he could see yellow tire tracks where someone had ridden over the double median lines when they were freshly painted. bare trees gave way to steep cliffs of sandstone. on the narrow roadside was a broken bottle of wine some one must have thrown out when they were shit-faced. "there's a large field about seven miles east of here," jetzt said, staring through the windshield. he reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small tin with a drawing of three pine trees and popped the lid. inside was licorice from finland. a sweet, earthy scent filled the car. sunil recognized it immediately. he took three black pieces out, two with orange filling, and one with lime green. he snapped back the lid and put the tin back in his pocket. "want one?" he extended his palm. sunil took an orange one. licorce was his favourite candy. "thanks." "uh huh." they ate while "marvelous things" played. sunil's foot hopped from the gas pedal to the brake and he slowed down. there was what appeared to be a horse drawn carriage up ahead going about 20 mph. it was black with an extended roof and a florescent orange safety triangle on the back. the huge wheels were spoked. the horse was a belgium. sunil could see it wore blinders. he put on his left signal, checked for other cars, saw none, and drove around it. when he looked in the rear view mirror expecting to see an amish man, he was surprised to see a rather normal looking man wearing a baseball hat and a jean jacket with a sheep's wool collar. "that's dein blick," jetzt said, without turning around. sunil didn't notice that jetzt's gaze was tinged with pride. "he's on his way to where we're going." "why is he driving an amish buggy?" sunil asked. he found the licorce very tasty and if jetzt would have offered him another one he would surely have taken one. this time a lime one. "what you should be asking first is why his name is dein blick." jetzt said. he chewed his licorice and thought about the day he left cadeau de vous to prepare for sunil's departure from this world. dein blick was the one gifted to see that sunil was ready to go. he had two glass eyes able to look out of a man's soul and behold when he is prepared to journey inside. "he drives the cart because he thinks the amish are fascinating people. he says their beliefs are so strong that they live in their own worlds." "why is his name dein blick?" sunil asked, thinking that's what he was going to do. he was going to believe in something so strong that he would have to go to his own world to see what it was. "you can ask him yourself. he already knows everything about you."
