the_polytechnique_effect
epitome of incomprehensibility Continued from 21-07-01's half_asleep_thoughts:

I had an *AWAKE* idea that involved writing something about places having negative associations. The title was to be "The Polytechnique Effect," since my first association for the place is "school where a colleague got his degree" but to many it's primarily "1989 murder site."

(l'Ecole Polytechnique is in Montreal - I've walked past it)

Anyway, I didn't write that article. Until now, I guess.

And I was on the opposite side of the "Polytechnique effect" this spring, while doing my second German course. A sentence in my exercises mentioned Innsbruck, and being in an easily distractible mood, I went to look up where it was. So I open the map and I'm startled to see a place called Dachau, because I knew of the bad thing but not the ordinary thing (that it's the name of the town too).

Anyway, it's clear Montreal can't seem to decide which German city it is (see avatar_the_montreal_sanskrit_berlin_wall).

e_o_i I always forget when I've already written about a thing.

Case in point: part of oddly_specific_recurring_dreams retells this same incident, while 2020's http://blather.newdream.net/h/hiroshima.html has the same idea.

e_o_i ...by which I meant oddly_specific_recurring_dream

(Last night's was my phonetics prof berating me for not memorizing Sanskrit vocabulary...which would be oddly specific if repeated)
