raze she grew up on a dairy farm on the border of quebec and ontario. "that's why i'm kind of a country singer," she said. there were tractors. there was corn. there were soybeans. there was a barbed wire fence she cut her face on before she knew what a barbed wire fence was. there were a few chickens. her mother always told her when she got older she'd wish she married a farmer. her mother was wrong.

the first time she sang in public it was at a family reunion. she sang "tomorrow" from "annie". she was wearing a onesie. her aunt was playing an old upright piano. she got one word into the song and started crying. she ran off the stage and hid behind the cattle barn on the fairground.

when she grew up she got as far away from the farm as she could. she studied theology. she got a gardenia plant because it was billie holiday's favourite. she waited for it to flower. she got a job down at the harbour welcoming ships to canada. she drove the seafarers in a van to the seaman's club where they could use the telephone or the internet or smoke or drink or play pool or go to church, and then she drove them back to the harbour.

most of the time she thought about love, and what it was, and how she was going to make it stay if it showed up. everyone in the harbour knew what it was like to miss someone. they laughed a lot. but they didn't laugh when they talked about the people they missed.

she said her superhero name would be "dull and unimaginative girl". and maybe we're always the opposite of what we think we are.
