going to soccer this afternoon i watched the homeschooled neighbor-boy mowing my other neighbor's wet lawn (which is stupid because all the grass will stick to the blades) and [shouldn't he have graduated by now? where are his friends? he's so cute, why isn't he out with a girl or something?] he had a hole in the butt of his jeans and we pulled out of beautiful ravines and arches of viney trees and i kept noticing bradford pear trees, everywhere.

the swinger of birches natalie and i walk out the front door of daniel's house underneath what is now a night sky. we inhale deeply and realize that smell. i stop and breathe lightly, and ask, "do you smell that?"
she says, "smell what"
i say, "breathe, and tell me what you smell."
she says, "cold trees" and i say, "exactly" we walk to daniel's car. it smells of southern trees and deep south.
