It sounds too poetic - too much like something buffalo do - to be used this way: "After July 1st, 2022, you will no longer be able to roam on the cellular network in the U.S." (from the chatr website).

Roam on the network: I picture someone tightrope-walking on all those invisible wires. Anyway, the U.S. thing wasn't my concern, because the phone would be supported in the U.K., and I'd be using it more for the alarm clock and camera. I just need to confirm how to turn internet access off, if it's as simple as pressing the wifi button or more complicated. Because the call and text fees aren't too much, but "data usage" is $30.00/MB. Maybe I'll go to the store today and ask? I have to pick up two books anyway. None of this is terribly thrilling, but I just wanted to comment on "roam" becoming a verb for "use a cell phone in a place that's not your zone." The buffalo don't do this, do they?

it's more complicated, but not necessarily too much more. you could turn it to airplane mode then turn wifi back on manually (which will block roaming but let you connect to, say, a coffeeshop's network). usually you can dig into the network settings and disable roaming itself, or you can buy a local sim card in europe for super cheap and not bother changing settings. we used to do this when away for at least two weeks. a fraction of a monthly canadian plan for significantly more data, etc, on a pay as you go sim card from a corner store. about 6 years ago i paid 5£ for like 2gb.

You're awesome, thanks! I didn't even think of that, but voilà: in "mobile networks," under "settings," I can turn data roaming on or off. That disables internet access when you go outside your country, while still allowing for calls. I'll double-check with my friend who's had this provider just to make sure, but yes - thanks for the unexpected blather tech help! (And for the SIM card advice too, though I don't expect I'll need the internet on my phone there; it wasn't until last year that I even got a phone plan with internet data.) ... Fingers crossed, I will roam to the UK - physically - on June 12-22. Plans have been smallified: no Scotland, not even Liverpool, but a jaunt to Cardiff in Wales and to Stonehenge are planned. In terms of rock-based attractions, my brother suggests the Rollright Stones, but I don't know if it's easily get-at-by-bus-able.
