Sonya 1987. Kindergarten at Glider Elementary School in San Jose, CA. My lunch box was bright yellow and had the 3 famous (or infamous) chipmunks on the front. I remember that I had wanted a Care Bears lunch box, but instead got a hand-me-down from my older brother. It came complete with the matching thermos. In the end I was grateful because it could have been a brown paper bag instead. The lunch box is long gone now sadly.

Ah...those lunches of long ago. Bologna sandwiches, apple slices or a bunch of grapes, some cheese crackers, and a Capri Sun. Maybe it wasn't altogether healthy but it was a child's meal. Every now and then I'd get cookies if I was well behaved.

The rituals of lunch...we would meet under the fat oak tree that was next to the sandbox and examine each other's stash. We'd proceed to trade snacks as if we were professional stockbrokers on Wall Street - each child examining the 'true value' of what they were to receive or offer. My favorite was fruit snacks. I was addicted to the artificial goodness I suppose.

I'm 20 years old now. I haven't changed that much. I still like Capri Suns. I don't ever touch Bologna sandwiches though. I like salads with honey mustard dressing and cherry tomatoes...oh and when I'm really well behaved...I also chomp into a chewy chocolate chip cookie and it usually reminds me of the oak tree and our little stock exchange. Lunch time rules.
